Odious-
Part of speech: adjective
Definition: extremely unpleasant; repulsive
In the Story: “... and the odious cares of the kitchen.”


Disdain-
Part of speech: noun
Definition: a feeling of contempt for anything regarded as unworthy; haughty contempt; scorn
In the Story: “... she threw the invitation on the table with disdain…”


Immoderate-
Part of speech: adjective
Definition: not moderate; exceeding just or reasonable limits; excessive
In the Story: “...and her heart began to beat with an immoderate desire.”


Askew-
Part of speech: adjective
Definition: crooked; awry
In the Story: “With frowsy hair, skirts askew, and red hands…”


Perceive-
Part of speech: verb
Definition: to become aware of, know or identify by means of the senses
In the Story: “... she suddenly perceived a woman who was leading a child.”


Anteroom-
