Core 6 Context Research

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular French writer considered one of the fathers of short stories. Maupassant was born on August 5, 1850 and died July 6, 1893 at the age of 42. He wrote some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. His first published story, "Boule de Suif" is often considered his main masterpiece.

"The Necklace" has the most famous of all of Maupassant's twist endings, which is also why it's his most famous short work. He was already well-known in France by the time he wrote it. It was a particular hit with Americans, who couldn't get over how cool the ending was.

Maupassant wanted to explore the deeper meanings of everyday events. The lie of appearances is highlighted by Madame Forestier’s necklace, which appears to be made of diamonds but is actually nothing more than costume jewelry. The fact that it comes from Madame Forestier’s jewelry box makes it seem valuable. The necklace changes from worthless to precious makes it seem that true value depends on perception and that appearances can easily deceive.
