1) Discussion Question #1
Do you really think Mattie's mom is at the ludington's farm or do you think Eliza knows something?
Victoria: I think Eliza knows something Matilda doesn’t.
Marian: I think her mom is at Ludington farm and she is just waiting for Mattie and help the farmers.
Viv: I don't think that her mom survived the fever. she died on the way to the farm.
2) Discussion Question #2
What do you think would have happened to Mattie if she had not found Eliza.
Viv: she would die alone with Nell on the street.
Victoria: She would’ve died if it weren’t for Eliza.
Marian: She would of tried to find someone who could help take care of her or she would try to take care of herself.
3) Discussion Question #3
What is Mattie going to have do with the coffee shop if her mom is dead? what would you do?
Viv: She is too young to control it and it’s too hard with just two people.
Marian: Mattie would probably fail and the shop would probably close down and she would die.
Victoria: She probably would keep if she wanted to get money.
4) Discussion Question #4
How would you have reacted if you were in Matties place would you have attacked the robbers or stayed quite.
Viv: I would reveal my secret identity of being a ninja and kill the robbers and save the Grandfather. I mean, she had a sword why didn't she just kill him.
Marian: I would fall into a ball and cry while sitting under my bed.
Victoria: I would leave the house if I could get out.
“Bring Out Your Dead!”
This wheelbarrow, and the kids and adults wrapped in sheets are shown in the book on page 150, when a man was going through the streets and saying, “bring out your dead!” Mattie brings out her grandfather and follows the man to the “graveyard”. My brothers face also represents the depression and sadness throughout the city.
I thought to myself a question,
Is the reason why the grandfather teached Matilda
how to play chess because it had something to do with war.
Chess was invented a long time ago. But when the game started to become a medieval game it helped them see what they looked like on the board. Soon they started moving the pieces around and it started to be a more of a popular game. This is one of the reasons the grandfather probably loved chess so much. Well you know how the grandfather teached Matilda how to play chess before she knew how to read. Its because it was just then starting to get out there in the world. Since the grandfather was in one of the wars he had learned how to play chess. Before I end this long lecture I wanted to leave with one last thought. The big huge reason why the grandfather even brought up chess to Matilda in the first place is because he wanted her to remember how much fun he was.
