In the story Octavian Nothing, Octavian lives in a house full of men with his mother. He and his mother are the only ones in the house with real names. All of the other men are referred to with a certain number. The dogs on this sock are all the same, with no identity, similar to the numbered men in the story. The dogs also represent Cloud, Octavians stray dog friend that he unknowingly poisoned and killed.
Context by Courtney
pg. 101
“Mr. 03-01 used the occasion of the dinner to introduce his various suits to Lord Cheldthorpe, … and the hope that Lord Cheldthorpe would invest in a portion of Indian land west of Virginia, against the day when Parliament lifted it’s interdiction against settling there.”
Mr. 03-01 wanted Lord Cheldthorpe to buy land as an investment, west of Virginia. (West of Virginia does not mean West Virginia, Virginia during that time was a different size.)
Wanting to buy land from Indians was a common thing to do except that parliament restricted and frowned upon the purchase of land from the Indians because of all of the conflict it caused.
The Indians and British had different ideas of what it meant to buy land and the things you could do when you bought property, thus causing issues.
One issue that occurred was that the Europeans would trick the Indians thus causing conflicts. the Europeans would create loopholes and the Indians were unaware to the circumstances they agreed upon. However the Indians knew more about the land the Europeans were purchasing than the buyers did. Unfortunately for the Indians, the Europeans had bigger size and the Indians population was constantly dwindling due to the fact of warfare, diseases and being sold into slavery.
Mr. 03-01 wanted to buy land from the indians and sell it back at a higher price. basically is concept was to hold onto it until it’s value went up. (This is a similar idea to the buy and hold concept for stocks in math we have been learning about.)
The main purpose of buying land was for profit. The person who would buy this land back from Mr. 03-01 would most likely use the land in these ways. The buyer would want to grow a crop, most likely tobacco, which was the most popular crop for a long time period. Then the buyer would have to sell his plant and made the profit to use for his academic endeavors.
Virginia was a prime location for land because of the ideal temperatures, the winter season was not too harsh, extreme droughts are not common another similar factors. Lots of plantations already existed in the area and were successful so based off other farms profits they had a steady, and predictable guess of the money that would make.
