Context
Dr. Benjamin Rush the doctor in Fever was a founding father and signed the Declaration of Independence. He fought for women’s rights and opposed slavery. He strived to learn more about mental disorders and was one of the founders of american psychiatry. The doctor focused on the poor and his status grew. When Rush was appointed to surgeon-general of the middle department of the Continental Army.This is where you hear the bad things about Rush; he didn’t like the Army Medical service which was led by Dr. William Shippen. He complained to George Washington, who asked congress to decide. Congress made sure Shippen stayed so Rush resigned. As the war went on Washington’s Army wasn’t doing well so Rush secretly campaigned for Washington to be removed as commander in chief, and actually wrote an anonymous letter to Patrick Henry (The Governor of Virginia).
