Blood on the River-Context + Art

                                        CONTEXT

  • Jamestown is located 60 mi from the mouth of the chesapeake bay
  • Jamestown was named after King James who was the ruler of England at that time
  • The colonists arrived at Jamestown on May 14, 1607
  • The first place that the settlers landed was a much safer place than where they ended up settling but because they got attacked by the indians almost immediately after they landed they moved to what now is Jamestown
  • The colonists landed where they did because they thought that it would be a good spot
  • It ended up not being a good spot because of the lack of good drinking water and the mosquitoes which brought diseases.
  • When Captain John Smith left the first time most of the colonist died of either disease, starvation, or indian attack
  • Of the 104 colonists that went to Jamestown only 60 survived
